Start With the Animal and the Heat Source
Buy for the environment you need to create, rather than choosing a thermostat based on enclosure size alone. A juvenile chameleon in a compact setup, a bearded dragon with a high-output basking lamp, and a gecko using a heat mat have very different heat-control needs.
First, identify what the thermostat will control. Common heat sources include ceramic heat emitters, deep heat projectors, radiant heat panels, incandescent or halogen basking bulbs, and under-tank heat mats. Check the actual wattage of every device connected to the thermostat, then choose a unit with a rating comfortably above that total. Do not run a 150-watt heater on a controller rated for 150 watts. Start with a conservative setting and make small adjustments. Check the basking surface, surrounding air, cool side, and overnight low.
